Setting up email programs and apps: Activating POP3 / IMAP / SMTP access

Access for email programs (POP3, IMAP, SMTP) is disabled by default in eclipso Mail Europe for security reasons. You need to enable it once in your webmail account before you can connect your email program or app.

InfoSecurity note: By disabling client access by default, your account is protected even if your password falls into the wrong hands. An attacker may be able to log into webmail, but cannot retrieve or send emails via external programs or scripts – as long as you have not actively enabled access.

Why is POP3/IMAP/SMTP access disabled by default?

Automated attacks on email accounts often target SMTP connections directly to send spam or phishing emails from hijacked accounts. By disabling access by default, eclipso Mail Europe protects you and other recipients from this type of abuse. Activation requires a deliberate one-time action in webmail – this ensures that only genuine users can set up access.

What are the requirements?

  • You need an active eclipso Mail Europe account.
  • You must log in once via webmail (www.eclipso.eu/login) to enable access.
  • Activation is free of charge and available for all plans without restrictions.

How to enable POP3/IMAP/SMTP access:

  1. Log in to your eclipso Mail Europe account: www.eclipso.eu/login
  2. Open the menu SettingsPOP3/IMAP/SMTP
  3. Click the button Enable access for email clients
  4. The activation takes effect immediately. You can now set up your email program.

  1. Settings › POP3/IMAP/SMTP
  2. Click Disable access

InfoTip: If you use email exclusively via the web interface or our app, we recommend keeping client access disabled. This additional step protects your account against unauthorized access.
