Unsubscribe from newsletters and mailing lists - List-Unsubscribe

Newsletters and mailing lists can be unsubscribed with just one click directly from the email view. eclipso Mail Europe automatically recognizes RFC 2369 compliant unsubscribe links in newsletter emails and displays them prominently in a banner above the email. The feature supports both external unsubscribe links (HTTP/HTTPS) and email-based unsubscriptions (mailto).

InfoSecurity tip: Only use the unsubscribe buttons provided by eclipso. Never click on suspicious links in the email text itself, as they may be fake.

How do I recognize an unsubscribe link?

If a newsletter or mailing list email contains a standardized unsubscribe link (List-Unsubscribe header), a blue info banner is automatically displayed above the email. The banner contains a clearly visible Unsubscribe button.

How to unsubscribe from a newsletter or mailing list:

The unsubscribe function is available in all views (Preview Right, Preview Bottom, Full View).

Unsubscribe with external link (HTTP/HTTPS):

When a newsletter email is open, you will see the blue info banner with the unsubscribe button above the email content.

  • Unsubscribe: Click on the Unsubscribe button in the banner.
  • Confirmation: You will be automatically redirected to the provider's unsubscribe page (new browser tab).
  • Note: Some providers require additional confirmation on their website.

Unsubscribe via email (mailto):

For newsletters with email-based unsubscription, eclipso Mail Europe automatically opens a pre-filled unsubscribe email.

  • Unsubscribe: Click on the Unsubscribe button in the banner.
  • Email form: A new email window automatically opens with pre-filled recipient and subject.
  • Sender selection: eclipso Mail Europe automatically detects which of your email addresses (incl. aliases) the newsletter was sent to and preselects it as sender.
  • Subject pre-filled: The system automatically sets "unsubscribe" as the subject if the newsletter provider has not specified their own subject. This standard term is recognized by most mailing list systems (e.g. Google Groups).
  • Send: Send the unsubscribe email with one click on Send email.

Special features for BCC mailing lists (e.g. Google Groups):

eclipso Mail Europe automatically recognizes the correct recipient address even for BCC-sent mailing lists.

  • Automatic detection: The system analyzes the email headers (Delivered-To, Envelope-To, Received) and finds the correct destination address.
  • Alias support: Even if the newsletter was sent to one of your alias addresses, it is automatically selected as the sender for the unsubscribe email.
  • Manual adjustment: You can change the sender address in the dropdown menu at any time before sending.

Why is no unsubscribe button displayed?

Not all newsletters and mailing lists use the standardized List-Unsubscribe header (RFC 2369). In this case, you must manually unsubscribe via the link contained in the newsletter text.

InfoTip: Reputable newsletters always contain an unsubscribe link, either as a standardized header or in the footer of the email. If an unsubscribe link is completely missing, it may be spam - mark such emails as spam.

Privacy and Security

eclipso Mail Europe processes List-Unsubscribe links according to the following security principles:

  • Protocol filtering: Only secure protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, mailto) are allowed - others are blocked.
  • No tracking parameters: eclipso does not add any additional tracking parameters to unsubscribe links.
  • External links: HTTP/HTTPS links open in a new tab with rel="noopener noreferrer" (no referrer tracking).
  • Internal processing: Mailto links are processed completely internally - no forwarding to external mail clients.
